ODBC
Q I
cannot establish an ODBC connection, what settings can I check?
A Check the
following:
| 1 |
Check that you
have ODBC drivers installed on your computer for your specific
database format. If not, see our preferred driver supplier – OpenLink. |
| 2 |
Make sure that
there is a physical connection between your computer and
the computer holding the data source – ie, on the same
network. |
| 3 |
Run an ODBC test.
There are various ODBC testers available on the Internet. |
|
|
|
Q I
cannot establish a TCP/IP connection, how can I check it?
A Try the
following:
| 1 |
Check you have
ODBC drivers installed on your computer for your specific
database format. If not, see our preferred driver supplier OpenLink. |
| 2 |
Make sure that
there is a physical connection between your computer and
the computer holding the data source, ie, on the same network. |
| 3 |
On Macs, check
that TCP/IP is set to E/NET and not to PPP in the Apple Talk
Control Panel. |
| 4 |
Ensure that your
computer and the one containing the data source have the
appropriate subnet masks to enable them to see each other,
eg:
Server Address 192.0.0.1 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Mac Address 192.0.0.2 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0. |
| 5 |
Try to ‘ping’ the
server. (Ping is a utility that confirms that the connection
between two TCP/IP computers exists. This type of program
is either provided with your network card software or available
for free download from the Internet.) |
| 6 |
Ensure that your
network protocol is set to TCP/IP and the host TCP/IP address
is entered correctly in the ODBC setup control panel. |
|
|
|

Q I
cannot connect LinkUP to my SQLServer.
A Please check
the following:
| 1 |
TCP/IP protocol
is installed on the SQLServer itself. Note: Default installation
will NOT install TCP/IP, the server needs to be stopped and
restarted. |
| 2 |
TCP/IP on the
Mac needs to be installed and configures to be in the same
subnet as the server, ie, if the server has an address of
192.168.x, then your computer must have an address of 192.168.x
(where x is a number between 1 and 255, excluding number
10 and any other used by existing network devices). |
| 3 |
Ping the server
from your computer. |
| 4 |
Check ODBC components
are installed correctly on your computer. It should have
an ‘ODBC Setup PPC’ control panel available as
well as the SequeLink folder. |
| 5 |
Check ODBC components
are installed correctly on the server. The NT server should
have a SequeLink program group and the administrator should
be run and the process started. |
|

Q Where
do I put the OpenLink ODBC licence file for a single tier driver?
A The licence file should be placed in one of the following
locations depending on the OS you are using
Mac OS X - The licence should be placed in
the following directory:
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/OpenLink/Bin
Mac OS 9 or 9 Classic – The licence
file should be placed in the following directory:
System Folder/Preferences
Q Where
do I put the OpenLink ODBC licence file for a multi tier driver?
A The licence file should be placed in one of the following
location
C:\Program Files\Openlink\Bin
Q I
am using the OpenLink Bridge driver to connect to my database.
When I try to make a connection I receive an error reading
(Miscellaneous TLI error). Why?
A This
is because you are using two different versions of OpenLink
drivers on the server and client eg: OpenLink driver V5.0 on
the client and OpenLink driver V5.1 on the server. To solve
this problem uninstall current drivers on both the client and
the server, making sure you take a copy of the licence file
(oplrqb.lic) from the OpenLink / Bin directory on the server.
Then download and install the latest set of drivers from OpenLink

Q When
using LinkUP with OpenLink drivers to run an update I noticed
that there is text missing from some of the records which contain
long descriptions of over 255 characters. Why?
A This is
because you did not uncheck the "Defer fetching of long data" option
from Options tab in the ODBC Administrator on the client. Please download our instructions describing
where this option can be changed.
Q I
am trying to connect to a database on the PC/Server from my MAC
but I don’t know the IP Address of the PC/Server for the
OpenLInk configuration. What can I do?
A You can
use the server name instead of the IP address simply by inputing the computer
name in the Hostname section of the OpenLInk configuration screen.
Q I
am using SequeLink drivers on a MAC 0S 9.x to connect to my
SQL server database. However I cannot view/read “nvar” or “nvarchar” data
fields from my SQL database. How do I solve this?
A SequeLink does not support nvar
and nvarchar field formats. However our current ODBC driver supplier does support
such formats. Please visit www.openlinksw.com for
more details.
Q I
am having trouble making a connection to my database using
the OpenLink Multi-Tier driver.
A If you have researched the other
ODBC issue solutions on these technical FAQs and had a look at OpenLink's Online
technical support (www.openlinksw.com),
Please download these
instructions explaining how to create an OpenLink log file. This may enable
us to see where your problem lies. Once you have created the file, email it
to us on support@mcresearch.co.uk
Q When
I start QuarkXPress on my Mac I receive the error ‘XTension
not compatible with this version of QuarkXPress‘, Why?
A There are three possible reasons
for this error to occur.
| 1 |
Check that you
are running Quark 6.1 or 6.5 minimum. |
| 2 |
Make sure you
have the dongle drivers correctly installed (If running with
a full version of LinkUP). |
| 3 |
Make sure you
have an OpenLink ODBC driver installed. If you have version
3.52 of the OpenLink drivers installed, you will need to
copy the folder 3.52 from
Macintosh HD/Library/Frameworks/iODBC.Frameworks/Versions and paste it
back to the same location renaming the folder to ‘3.51’. |

Dongle Issues
Q I
have a Mac with an ADB dongle and I want to upgrade to a USB,
how do I do that?
A We have
a dongle exchange policy by which we exchange dongles for the
cost it takes to cover the hardware, reprogamming and postage.
If you have an ADB and do not wish to be parted from it, you
may purchase a Griffin iMate (www.griffintechnology.com)
that will ensure your ADB works in your new USB port (MAC OS9.x
only). If you want to have a dongle exchanged, contact
us. To keep the costs down we post the dongle back to you,
if you require courier delivery we can quote you for that too.

Q I
see the message ‘Dongle not initialised’ when I
try to open LinkUP. I have installed the driver as directed,
what now?
A Check the
following:
| 1 |
Ensure your IT
department have the USB controller enabled, the dongle is
securely plugged in and you have downloaded the appropriate
driver. |
| 2 |
Download this dongle
medic application to see if your dongle is detected. |

Data Source Issues
Q I
cannot update from some DBF files.
A DBF drivers
to not support non-DOS file naming conventions, so make sure
that there are no non-DOS characters or spaces in the table
names.

Q I
am unable to update, connect to or edit the data source.
A It could
be that only characters A-Z are allowed in the data source
names and characters other than these A-Z, eg, spaces or underscores,
may have been used. Rename the data source names.

Q On
my PC I get LinkUP Error: Error reading data [microsoft][ODBC
Excel Driver] Syntex error (missing operator) in query expression ‘field
name’ when trying to view certain fields from an Excel
spreadsheet through the dataviewer. Why does this happen?
A This is happening because
you have spaces in the field name. This can be proved by removing any fields
from the dataviewer with a space in the field name and hit requery you will
see all the data from fields that do not contain spaces in their field names.
Field names should not contain spaces or uppercase, or any non alphabetical
or numerical characters.

Q On
my MAC when I click on certain fields in my dataviewer and click
requery I lose all the data in the viewer. What causes this?
A This is happening because you have spaces
in the field name. This can be proved by removing any fields from the dataviewer
with a space in the field name and hit requery you will see all the data from
fields that do not contain spaces in their field names. Field names should
not contain spaces or uppercase.

Q My
data in Excel is formatted correctly, but when I update using
LinkUP, I lose the commas in my numbers and it adds a .0 to the
end of all records, how can I stop this happening?
A Please
see this Excel
document with formulas to prevent this. The explanation of ‘why’ is
in the document.

Q I
have an SQL database and my field named ‘language’ isn’t
working properly.
A You
will have to rename this field. For some reason it conflicts
with other command calls.

Q I
cannot see the decimal places from a price field in the dataviewer
and they are not displayed after update. Why?
A This
is due to the database format, Please download the
access database and view the query field format to amend this
configuration.

Troubleshooting
Q When
I use LinkUP, or the demo, my computer crashes or freezes.
A Please check
the following:
| 1 |
Mac OS versions
should be compatible with the programs, OS9 for LinkUP 7.x
and OSX for LinkUP 8 for Quark 6. |
| 2 |
If you are currently running
OS9.0, it is recommended that you upgrade or use ATM 4.6.1
(Adobe Type Manager) or the latest version. Also for older
OS’s, please ensure you have the Font Manager Patch
available from www.adobe.com/support. |
| 3 |
QuarkXPress should have a
minimum of 25MB (set under ‘get info’ in the
QuarkXPress application file). |
| 4 |
On Macs, the ATM should be
set up as follows (ATM is accessible via the ‘Apple’ list,
or in Control Panels):
• Cache size - 2Mb
minimum
• Preserve character
shapes - ON
• Smooth font edges
on screen – ON
• Disable smoothing
at screen font sizes - OFF
• Precision character
positioning – ON
• Enable font substitution
- OFF
• Enable auto activation
- GLOBAL |
| |
Also ensure: |
|
a. Virtual memory
OFF (under memory control panel). |
|
b. TCP/IP installed
and configured. |
|
c. ODBC installed
and configured. |
|
d. Create a duplicate
folder, copy QuarkXPress application into this folder. Inside
this folder create an XTensions folder and copy the LinkUP
and Xpress tags filter into this folder. Launch this copy
of QuarkXPress by double clicking on the QuarkXPress icon.
(This is to ensure that other Xtensions are not interfering
with LinkUP) |
|
e. Ensure that
you are running only ONE of the LinkUP XTensions by placing
it in the XTensions folder within the QuarkXPress folder
by double clicking the QuarkXPress folder you are currently
running. |
|
f. If you are
working with ASCII text files only, you will need to request
the LinkDB version (which is not compatible with Quark V.5
or V.6). |
|
|
|

Q I
have created a where statement that I wish to use, However when
I try to copy it to the where clause in Configure / Data sources
it overruns and cuts the end of my statement off. How do I solve
this?
A LinkUP will
work with up to 64 characters for the where statement. If your where statement
exceeds this limit then you will need to query your data from within your database
to achieve the required results.

Q I
have downloaded the demo version, followed the directions for
Quark 6.0 on PC, and am unable to get the XTension to load.
When I startup Quark 6.0 and launch the XTensions Manager,
that xtension has "Error. XTensions module failed to load." How
do I solve this?
A You
will need to run the Quark updater for Quark 6.1, this is available
free of charge at www.quark.com.
If you are running Quark 6.0 on a MAC you will also need to
install ODBC before LinkUP can run. Please read the Tutorial
Essentials.

Q My
text is being imported as Helvetica or Arial and does not retain
the style sheets as set up in my QuarkXPress document?
A This
is a recognised issue with QuarkXPress 6.5. The text can be re-styled
after import. We are awaiting an update from Quark.

Q If
I connect to my datasource via Configure, Data Sources, the
Markup Tools palette is not auto-populated with field names;
why?
A If
you want to autopopulate the Markup Tools palette, create a New
View via the Data Viewer. The full setup/configuration way of
creating field names is to do so manually and assumes you wish
to create your specific field names for markups and their entire
configuration individually.

Q I
have recently changed the format of my pictures from jpeg to
tiff, Now whenever I run an update my pictures are not imported.
Why?
A If
you change the format of your images you will also need to replicate
the change in your database image reference field or set a find
and replace rule for the image filed using LinkUP Configure field
links.

Q I
receive the following error when trying to import or export
from my database: ODBC syntax error reading ‘field name’.
Why?
A This error may occur if your field
names are the same as the reserved function names in your database for example
Microsoft Access has reserved functions such as Time, Desc, Note. Download
the attached PDF for a full list of reserved
function names.

Tips and hints
Q How
do I filter the data viewer record set (I can only see 200
of my fields at a time)?
A To filter
the data viewer please download and
follow these instructions.

Q Some
pointers on Character Maps.
A Characters
are always translated both on input and output.
Current character mapping is saved with the document and within the project,
ie, reloading the project file will reconfigure maps accordingly. You can change
the current mapping by loading the character
map files. This action is accessible by selecting LinkUP, Configure, Character
Map.
The following notes
apply when producing your own custom map files. Please also
refer to this Character
Map document:
- Input and output terms are relative, depending on the data flow direction.
Input value is the value expected from the database during document update/build.
Output is the new (replaced) character during the same process. So, for example,
A from the database needs to be B on the page during database to page flow:
A \066
B \066
The mapping would search down the input side of the list and take the first
match. It would match the first A (ASCII 65) and replace with the new output
value 66 which, in this case is B.
- If the process is reversed, ie exporting
from Quark to the Database, input value is the value expected
to be sent to the database, output value is the character to
be found in the Quark document. So, for example, if A from the
document needs to be B in the database during the page to database
flow:
A \065
B \066
The mapping would search down the output side of the list and take the first
match. So first matching A value (ASCII 65) will be replaced with the new input
character B. In case of multiple matches, the first encountered match will
be executed. Ie, if you have several places where you mapped A to B in the
first instance and C in the second instance, only B would ever be output.
Q We
want LinkUP to export text to the Quark document that has tags
applied to it, ie <b>Bold</b> and <I>Italic</I>.
Can LinkUP do this?
A Yes,
choose LinkUP tags on export. In the LinkUP menu in Quark,
pick Configure>Field Links, pick the ‘Basic Actions’ button
and in ‘During Update Process Tags as:’ choose ‘LinkUP’ radio
button.
Q Can
I reconfigure LinkUP so it doesn’t sort by key?
A Yes, Click
on LinkUP / Configure / Datasources, select the datasource
you wish to sort and click Edit. In the Order By field type
the name of the field you wish to order, this will sort the
field in alphabetical ascending order. To sort the same fields
in descending order leave a space after the field name and
type desc. You can also sort by multiple fields by typing a
(, ) before typing any additional fields to order by.
Eg: Order By: product desc, description.
This will sort your data with descending product then description.

Q How
can I find my LinkUP serial number and dongle (security code)?
A There
are two ways in which you can acheive this. The first is to enable
LinkUP from the utilities menu and click LinkUP / About LinkUP
from within Quark and the second is to download the relevant
application below and click update security key. This will provide
you with both the LinkUP serial number and the dongle (security
key) reference number.

Q How
do I create a relational database based on my Quark document
using the LinkUP Enterprise export function?
A Download
instructions here. (.zip file includes Quark template, MS Access Database
and full instructions).

Q When
building a relational document, the next item starts at the
end of the last line. I want the markup to include the return
character.
A In
the Markup Properties extended palette, you need to ensure that
you have the correct amount of ‘Offset Characters’ configured.
Ie, if the return is the next character on from the end marker,
you need to have End Offset Character as 1. The same can be used
for formatting prior to the start marker.

Q If
I convert my documents from QuarkXPress 4 to QuarkXPress 6
will the LinkUP markups remain in place?
A Yes (presuming you have upgraded
to the relevant version of LinkUP). You may need to change your datasources
or picture paths but the links should remain embedded. Remember you may open
a QXP4 document in QXP6 but, once opened, you will not be able to open it again
in QXP4 unless you save back via QXP5. Always ensure you have a clean copy
of the QXP4 document to revert to in case of problems.

Q I
want to create a multi-level build (relational build) using
a template, how do I do this?
A Download these
instructions for a simple three level build (LinkUP Enterprise only). The download
includes detailed instruction on how to markup the document, a sample Access
database and a QuarkXPress template. The document is for Quark 6 on a PC, but
can be used on a Mac too. If you need any further instructions about ODBC connections,
please download the demo bundle and see the Tutorial Essentials document.

Q Is
it possible to change the colour of my text box when I run
an update?
A Yes, please download our
tutorial for box colour updates

Q How
do I filter my data via LinkUP so I can build in sections?
A You can build in sections by applying
a where statement.

Q How
do I use the mail merge function
A Download this
tutorial explaining how to setup and configure LinkUP to use the mail merge
facility.

Q When
would I use the DBF version of the XTension?
A Please download these instructions.

Q I
want to create an index but I don't want to use the 'normal'
Index/FAQ function. Is there an alternative method of exporting
page numbers and creating indexes?
A This PDF explains
how to export page numbers to your database and then use this field to create
your index.
